The Hidden Treasures of Mississippi: Exploring the Barrier Islands and Their Rich History: Part 2/5

Ship Island is a must see if you are visiting the Biloxi, Gulfport area! It is a truly unique destination that offers a perfect combination of history, natural beauty, and recreation. The island is accessible by a 45-minute ferry ride, which operates daily during the summer months from Gulfport and Biloxi. Once on the island, visitors can experience a wide range of activities.

One of the most popular activities on the island is to soak up the sun on the soft white sand beaches. The island's crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming, and visitors can also try their hand at fishing or wildlife viewing. The island is home to a variety of marine life, including dolphins, sea turtles, and a variety of shorebirds. There are restrooms, a concession store, and chairs available to rent.

In addition to its natural beauty, Ship Island is also home to Fort Massachusetts, a historic military defense structure built during the Civil War. The fort was a critical part of the Union's defense of the Gulf Coast, as it helped to maintain control over the important shipping lanes in the area. The fort was a formidable structure, consisting of a brick and mortar complex surrounded by earthworks and a moat. The design was intended to withstand heavy artillery fire, and it did just that – even during a Confederate attack in 1862, the fort held strong.

After the war, the fort was used as a quarantine station for yellow fever patients, a training ground for soldiers during World War I, and a missile-tracking station during the Cold War. It was eventually decommissioned in 1963 and turned over to the National Park Service. Today, visitors can tour the fort and learn about its important role in American history.

So what are you waiting for?!? Book your ferry tickets and bring a picnic for a great day on the island.
