The Hidden Treasures of Mississippi: Exploring the Barrier Islands and Their Rich History: Part 5/5

Today, there is no fifth island in the current Mississippi barrier island chain, but there surely was in the past. This island was called Dog Island and was located approximately 12 miles offshore, situated between Ship and Horn Island. Records indicate that it was visible in the late 1800s but seemingly disappeared for decades. It reappeared in 1926, and local businessmen took advantage of the emerged real estate and built The Isle of Caprice Resort.

The Isle of Capri Resort was a grand establishment that catered to the elite and famous. The hotel boasted opulent architecture, luxurious accommodations, and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. It was accessible by several ferry services, and upon arrival, guests would partake in various activities, including dancing, sunbathing, and even swim races. It quickly became a symbol of elegance and sophistication, attracting prominent figures from the worlds of entertainment, politics, and business. The likes of Ernest Hemingway, Marilyn Monroe, and Louis Armstrong were among the illustrious names that graced its shores. These influential figures were drawn to the island's seclusion and mystique, seeking inspiration or simply an escape from prying eyes.

The resort began to struggle seriously in 1929 with the Great Depression and ultimately closed after being devastated by a hurricane. Local legend states that despite the storm heading straight for the island, several guests decided to stay. When Biloxi rescue workers reached the island several days after the storm, they found no survivors, and only debris remained where the island had once been.
